Whose music do you dance to ?
Whose creating that music ?
What is Lesbian music ?
Are Lesbians making music for Lesbians or for who ever ?
Are you making any music ? Any kind of Art ?
What and why is this important anyway.... .
A WISE LESBIAN once spoke of the fact that there have always been Lesbians so - - there has always been Lesbian Music.
Futher SHE stated that it is not accurate in assuming the word 'Lesbian' refers to all cultures of wimmin loving wimmin. That is to say that many places in the world have a different word for wimmin who love wimmin and live a life style as such.
the WISE ONE spoke of cultures from the ancient past that were only wimmin and wimmin who loved one another.
I imagine these 'LESBIANS' singing and playing the first instruments, drums and flutes. Of course none of this music was ever recorded and that is probably true today; the majority of Lesbians who make music, write, sing, play, etc are never recorded. They simply make music because they want to and like to do so.
It is those Lesbians that have made recordings that become the acknowledged ones. One of the reasons I put some of the music making I did on 'Day to Day' was to illustrate that in Lesbian community, at gatherings Lesbians make and create music as a natural way of celebration and connecting. They are not the ones that necessarity make recordings or desire to do so, but their creative expression is valid and validating and powerful !
more to come .....
I am ever thankful and grateful for my circle of Lesbian friends.
Music for Lesbians was created in 1987 by Barbara Ester & Bairbre with the release of "More of It" as a way to share the music we had written with other Lesbians. Music for Lesbians is for Lesbians. The work of creating the music, performing, arranging, mixing, and art work is done by Lesbians. The content reflects our unique Lesbian experience.
